In the city of Dambulla, the most famous cave Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka, the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is situated. This architectural masterpiece is under the protection of UNESCO.
The Temple area was used as a habitat for people from VII to III centuries B.C. The Golden Temple was carved into the rock in the I century B.C. In its five caves is the world’s largest collection of Buddha statues – 153 pieces. Many of them are more than 2000 years old! The “Golden” temple was named because 73 statues are covered with gold.
The stone Temple of the Sleeping Buddha located in Dambulla is the largest cave temple in South Asia.
The real treasure of the Temple is Buddhist wall painting, with a total area of 2100 m2. The ancient frescoes on the walls and ceiling reflect the main moments of the life of the Buddha: his birth, renunciation of the royal life, enlightenment, seven weeks after enlightenment, reading the first sermon and leaving for nirvana.
The Temple complex is located at an altitude of 350 m above sea level at the top of the mountain. The terrain is wooded and picturesque.
The Golden Temple is a sacred place for pilgrims for 22 centuries!
