In the center of Kandy, on the shore of the lake is the Buddha’s Tooth Temple, a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists from all around the world. DaladaMaligawa (the Sri Lankan name of the Temple) was built in the XVIII century specifically for the storage of an invaluable relic – the tooth of the Buddha. The tooth itself appeared on the island back in 371. In the old days, only the king and the elected monks had an access to the shrine, and today you can also look at the mortar with it.
The Temple is decorated with painted ceilings, doors inlaid with silver and ivory and wood carvings. Besides the tooth, in the Temple there is a statue of Buddha made from the whole emerald, a Buddha statue made of crystal and jade, a golden Buddha statue and the collection of old manuscripts.
