From the history of Sri Lanka it is known that with royal protection, a certain part of the population was engaged exclusively in local kinds of crafts. These people belonged to a certain caste, they were respected and treated with great reverence for their work. So far, genuine methods of creating local handicrafts have been kept secret by artisans.

Masks

Since the times immemorial in the culture of Sri Lanka, masks occupy a special place. They were used in rituals. The art of making traditional masks of Sri Lanka goes back to ancient times. Traditionally, masks are made only from one type of wood – the Kadura tree, which grows on the margins of rice fields in slightly waterlogged soil.
The aspect ratio and the overall size of the mask are recorded in manuscripts that have come down from the depths of centuries, and have since been steadily respected.
For any mask there is one main color – yellow. The rest of the colors of the paintings and shades of each mask have their own.
The expression of the face of each mask, made by the master, is unique, because it reflects its individual character.

Batik

There are several ways to produce batik, but the most traditional is still a hot batik, when a melted wax is applied to the sketch.
The technology of production is very laborious. Long before drawing the sketch, the fabric is carefully processed to give it elasticity and smoothness, and then starched for easier wax removal. After the preparatory work go to the sketch. Then, with the help of a special tool, chanting, waxes applied to the places that should not be painted. Then the fabric is being dipped in a single color paint. After that, the next stage of the wax covers the next fragment of the picture and the canvas is again sunk in the paint of a different color. The process is repeated until the desired result is achieved for all colors of the paint (from light to dark).
