In Sri Lanka, during your holiday at a hotel on the coast, you can take part in a short two or three hour boat excursions along the river, in the so-called boat-safari. The Bentota River is the most interesting in this aspect (although other rivers are also interesting, for example, Kalu Ganga). In the river and on its shores there are quite a lot of various living creatures – varans, crocodiles (mostly small, although there are also quite large specimens) and species of small monkeys. Of birds is often found – the fowler, heron, much less often, a large ashy owl. The banks of the river are covered with mangroves, among which there are many channels. Wading through them on a boat, under the arches of intertwined mangroves, it seems that you are in a fairytale forest, away from civilization …
Safari on the Maduriver is interesting because there are 64 small islands. Each of which is mastered in its own way. It can be a small old chapel-isle or an island of cinnamon, where a local will show the technology of making cinnamon sticks and oil.
Here you can watch the way local fishermen catch large shrimps so popular in the world just with primitive fences. They do not only fish, but also sand, extracting it directly from the bottom of the river.
